Designed by Kirsty Brooks and made by Proto Glass Studios, 2015Reason for highlighting
Kirsty Brooks has risen to the challenge of creating a modern art work that speaks to the history and heritage of the area. Inspired by the 1930s clock tower of the former Thrift Stores, which had dominated the site, the screen printed cladding to the new clock has images of industrial artefacts and processes specific to Kirkstall. The project is also dynamic as the lighting of the glass panels changes each hour.
Artist/maker notes
Kirsty Brooks studied architectural glass and painting at Edinburgh College of Art. She is currently a lecturer and independent architectural glass artist. Pivotal to her work is the manipulation of an image, typically screen printed and combined with a variety of glass processing techniques including sandblasting and etching to produce a final piece responding to the history or functioning of its surroundings.
