Reason for highlighting

Opposite the main door in the north wall, this is a window with large figures filling the  lights. They are executed in  a bold way with much acid etching and primary colours. It seems to me the Kettlewells  could well  have taken inspiration from the figures in the Great East Window of Gloucester Cathedral.

Other comments

There is a second two-light window by Molly Kettlewell in the south Chancel: A Wiltshire Landscape Memorial, 1979. This window is very different in style, yet it artfully and beautiful captures the feeling of the Wiltshire countryside, the open rolling hills, with  scenes of  ancient tree clumps which is typical of the area.

Artist/maker notes

Jasper Kettlewell (1905-77) and Molly Kettlewell (1914-99) were both talented artists, whose careers were defined by a visit to Chartres Cathedral in the 1950s. Inspired they enrolled at the Central School of Art & Design, where Tom Fairs was running the stained glass department. Their subsequent career was based around studios in Hertfordshire, Kent and Somerset, making stained glass windows and teaching students. After Jasper’s death Molly continued to work with the help of Sally Jackson & Norah Brown, who both help complete her final commissions, when Molly was forced to retire following a serious car accident.
