Charles Norris trained at the Royal College of Art before becoming a monk at Buckfast Abbey. He used his talents in the service of the church for many artistic endeavours but became best-known as the leading English exponent of dalle de verre. This takes slabs of chipped or faceted glass set in a concrete or resin base to create inspirational designs as the light interacts with the glass; his work at Buckfast is one of his finest achievements in the method.

His contributions to listed Modernist buildings are an integral part of their value and are mentioned in their listings. He spent the greater part of his life at Buckfast Abbey, where he established a stained glass studio.
