Church of St Andrew, Redbourne, Lincolnshire

An astonishing piece of technical virtuosity – among the best examples of pictorial painted glass and made immediately before the reinvention of ‘archaeological’ leaded glazing with self-coloured glasses. The use of enamels and silver stain to create tones from the palest yellow to deep red, all on one large pane of crown sheet glass, is quite breath-taking. This is an artist working absolutely at the top of his game in a technique and idiom now unfashionable and often dismissed, but entirely worthy of respect and admiration.
