Mark Angus, 2000Reason for highlighting
Mark Angus is one our greatest contemporary artists and this relatively small window, which glows like a jewel as one stands in the north aisle looking east, is a beautiful example.
Those who have been to Durham cathedral will notice that the window has, in a very simple way, a similarity to his “Daily Bread” window.
Artist/maker notes
Mark Angus (b. 1949) studied at Swansea School of Art before establishing his own studio in 1978. Since then he has designed and executed architectural stained glass commissions for churches, private homes and public institutions both in the UK and abroad, with a particularly strong body of work in Germany. He has a reputation for innovative and distinctive designs that relate to the architecture and function of the building.

Other comments
Also worthy of note, in the south wall of the nave, is a two-light window by Christopher Whall to St Cuthman, c.1921, in his distinctive style, although with slightly more muted colours. Amongst the other studios represented in the church are a number of windows from Jones & Willis, 1909. Their style could hardly be more different to the Christopher Whall, very traditional or old fashioned, depending on your view, but highly effective in communicating their story even when light levels are low and when many stained glass windows lose their sparkle.
Away from the stained glass the church’s main claim to fame is its wonderful mid-12th nave.
