Overview

There are a number of artists who have contributed to this website through their individual selections of 10 fine examples of British stained glass. While all naturally refrained from recommending their own work in the 10 selected, they have been asked to choose a window of their own that they feel reflects their personal work. Reason for highlighting

The window is dedicated to the life of the Reverend Canon Percival Hayman and his wife, Sylvia Mary Hayman. Both lived their lives in the light of Christian faith and doctrine. So it is appropriate that the window reflects some of the most basic Christian theological precepts. The rose without thorns, at the apex of the window, for example, suggests the flowering of lives lived in the hope of Christ.

What makes this window special is the inclusion of texts taken from the Reverend Canon Percival Hayman’s sermons. Hand written by his daughter and copied onto the glass, they add a personal touch.

Artist/maker notes

Caroline Swash is a practitioner, lecturer and writer on stained glass. As the granddaughter of the Arts and Crafts artist Henry Payne and daughter of stained glass artist Edward Payne she is the third generation of her family to practice. She began making her own windows in 1965 and has since been combining commissions in stained glass with family life, writing, painting and teaching. Her latest book is ‘The 100 Best Stained Glass Sites in London’, from which her selection is drawn.
