Reason for highlighting

Until visiting the Chester area with the British Society of Master Glass Painters, I was unaware of Trena Cox’s stained glass. During the conference her work cropped up time and again. Buckley has a fine example of Trena Cox’s later less naturalistic style. The colours are bright and jolly and the figures are stylised and decorative.

I found the intimate scale of the windows drew me to them. Indeed, I related to her somewhat quirky style of drawing as it reminded me of my own attempts to work figuratively in stained glass. I was also heartened to hear that although a slow worker (she only produced one to three windows a year which I also relate to) she worked for 50 years and has a large number of windows in her patch.

Other comments

There are a couple of other windows by Trena Cox in the church, while amongst other artists present, is a fine window of 1930 by A E Child, who associated with the famous Irish studio of An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass).

Artist/maker notes

Trena Mary Cox (1895–1980) trained at the Laird School of Art. In 1924 she moved her studio to Chester and was associated with Williams, Gamon & Co until the Second World War. After the war she was based at Watergate Street in Chester, where she remained until her death.
