Church of St Mary & All Saints, Lambourne, Essex

Although the church is some distance from the main road and reached by narrow single-track road, a visit here will be a very rewarding experience. The church exterior appears a mixture of Norman and Gothic, but both the exterior and interior were remodelled in the early Georgian period. The interior contains many monuments and has been described as resembling a military chapel.

The chief glory is 5 exquisite enamel painted panels dating from 1623-1637. Originating from Basle and installed in 1817, the panels depict; doubting Thomas, difference between Good and Evil, Adoration of the Magi, Christ and St Peter in the sea and the Adoration of the Shepherds. The panels contain several other smaller scenes. While continental panels are not uncommon, being collected by the wealthy mainly during the nineteenth century, panels as fine as these are rare.
