Reason for highlighting

During one of the British Society of Master Glass Painters conferences we were treated to a visit to the remote church of St Michael’s, which holds some of the best medieval glass in Devon. The painted and stained glass is delicate and expressive and it dates from a golden age of English glass painting. Some of the glass was lost and replaced with Victorian work and it is fun to try and spot the different styles. Well worth a visit to see the storytelling of the Seven Sacraments window. The figure of Christ was made by the Victorian firm of Clayton & Bell, who restored the windows in 1877, but the side panels are the real thing.

Artist/maker notes

The ‘Cadbury Master’ was a member of an important late 15th century workshop, probably based in Exeter, that produced work throughout the south-west. He takes his name from very fine work at St Michael, Cadbury, a village north of Exeter. Two other masters associated with the workshop have been identified in the six central figure of the east window of Exeter Cathedral, and the Seven Sacraments window at Crudwell in Wiltshire.
