Reason for highlighting

Arguably one of Whall’s best windows, which is full of fine detail and vivid colours, is a memorial window to two local girls, Monica and Dorothea Turnbull, that died in a fire.

Other comments

The other windows are largely filled with 19th century stained glass, with some incorporating reset medieval glass. There is an excellent booklet on the windows available in the church, prepared by Prebendary Derek Tinsley. His description of the Turnbull Window can be read here.

Artist/maker notes

Christopher Whitworth Whall (1849-1924) was one of the most prominent artists in the Arts & Crafts Movement, not only through his own work, but also through the influence he had on other artists as a teacher and writer. He taught at both the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal College of Arts, and his 1905 book ‘Stained Glass Works’ is still widely regarded as the most inspirational work of its type.
