Reason for highlighting

Memorial windows are extremely common and some include portraits of the deceased, usually dressed up as saints or angels. However, here the Rector’s wife, Catherine Manning, is in her own Victorian dress, ‘occupied in her favourite acts of mercy – clothing the naked and teaching the children of the poor’ (Royal Cornwall Gazette, 23 May 1867).

Other comments

The church has been described in the Buildings of England guides established by Nikolaus Pevsner, as one of the architectural highlights of Cornwall. This is the result of 40 years of renovations from 1908 by Ninian Comper. Unfortunately from the view point of the above window, this includes a massive Rood Screen with bars around the sides which means the Mrs Manning is now incarcerated!

Almost all the windows in the church are by Horwood Brothers, including a window in memory of the previous Rector, the Revd Sir Henry Molesworth, Bart. showing him in full Eucharistic vestments, holding a model of the church.

Artist/maker notes

Horwood Brothers was in business for about 40 years from 1856. They were based initially in Mells and later in Frome, Somerset. Their work is typical of a regional firm of the period and is mainly to be found in Somerset and Wiltshire though they did carry out commissions elsewhere in England, Wales, Ireland and overseas.

Of the three Horwood brothers, Edwin (1834-92), Harry (1838-1917) and Mark (1840-1904), Harry is particularly notable for the considerable success he enjoyed in North America, where he is still remembered via the Horwood Stained Glass Museum

Francis Charles Hingeston-Randolph (1833–1910) was born in Truro, attended Exeter College, Oxford and was ordained priest in 1856. He had wide antiquarian interests from an early age, along with an interest in church architecture, and was often consulted about the restoration of west country churches.
