In 2021 King Arthur’s Great Halls’ listing was upgraded to Grade II* by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on the advice of Historic England. In total there are 73 windows by Veronica Whall within King Arthur’s Great Halls, which remain displayed as originally intended, this being a key part in the decision.

Artist/maker notes

Veronica Whall (1887-1967) was a significant stained glass artist, painter and illustrator, and daughter of Christopher Whall, the leading artist of the Arts & Crafts movement. After studies at the Central School of Arts & Crafts, which included instruction by her father, she joined his studio. The two worked closely together, with Veronica’s role becoming increasingly important, including acting as co-designer. In 1922 they formed the firm of Whall & Whall Ltd. After her father’s death in 1924 she continued in business with her brother Christopher John Whall as co-director. The firm finally closed in 1953 upon her retirement.
