Ripon Cathedral, North Yorkshire
Address
Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Wilfrid, Minster Rd, Ripon HG4 1QTTheme
Overview
A variety of 19th century windows supported by some earlier and later work. Amongst the former the 14th century roundels set at the west end of the nave south aisle are particularly notable. Of later works, a free hanging panel toward the west end of the nave depicting Christ as a judge, by John Lawson of Goddard and Gibbs, 2005, is particularly striking.

Harry Harvey, 1977Reason for highlighting
In the east wall of the north transept is a window dedicated to St Wilfrid, founder of the first stone church on the site of the present cathedral. It was made by Harry Harvey in 1977. Immediately striking is the figure of St Wilfrid, but the surrounding detail is equally interesting, especially the symbols of the four Evangelists and the figures at the bottom rushing to help when, as a child, St Wilfrid’s house caught fire.
Artist/maker notes
Harry William Harvey (1922-2011) was born in Birmingham and received his initial training in stained glass from the local firm of Pierce & Cutler. After the war he joined Wippells of Exeter, before moving to York at the instigation of another Wippells old boy, Harry Stammers, with whom he worked until establishing his own studio in 1956. Two of his assistants, Ann Sotheran and the late Sep Waugh also went on to establish their own studios.
