Both John and I were at Glasgow School of Art together, albeit, he was a couple of years above me. The stained glass department was very small, and we all knew each other, and were taught by the same master – Alf Avella. Both John and I competed against each other for this commission, in a distillery whose whisky I love, and in a town where my pre-19th century ancestors originated from. Part of the brief was also to incorporate the ancient swirls and figures from the local Pictish standing stone in Cadboll. I was intrigued to see what John would come up with, to reflect the yellows, and golden brown hues of the Glenmorangie whisky range. The result is an extraordinary detailed 3-D glass etching, with yellow stain overlays. What’s not to like – whisky, the Highlands and glass. Well done John.
