Douglas Hamilton, 1951Reason for highlighting
The church was damaged by bombing during World War Two and nearly all its stained glass shattered. These windows were installed following the rebuilding. They are full of a variety of imagery, some reflecting the theme of deliverance from great peril, whilst other scenes are of local industry and of the arts. The latter is something of a tradition in Scottish stained glass that goes back to Stephen Adam. The examples here include shipbuilding, sugar refining and cooperage, and are good examples of the humanity found throughout Hamilton’s work.
Artist/maker notes
Douglas Hamilton (1895-1959) trained with the Stephen Adam Studio and worked for Guthrie & Wells before setting up his own business in 1938. Over the next 21 years, until his death in 1959, he made stained glass for well over 90 churches, mainly in Scotland.
