Reason for highlighting

Superb example of John Hayward’s distinctive style with close, cross-hatched leading, brilliant colours, and witty details. This memorial window contains many motifs associated with Dr Christopher Chavasse such as Olympic rings, his Military Cross and his artificial leg.

Other comments

At the west end of the south wall of the nave is a wonderful window by Ervin Bossányi on the theme of ‘In his hands a seed will grow’. It was created as a personal project in 1943 and installed in 1997 as a memorial to the artist and his wife. It sits at eye level, so affording a rare opportunity to get a close-up view of a window by Bossányi executed in his unique style.

Artist/maker notes

John Hayward (1929-2007) was not only one of the foremost stained glass artists of the post-war period but also a designer of church furniture and interiors. After St Martin’s School of Art he turned down a place the Royal College of Art to join Faithcraft, designing church furniture and arranging whole interiors, where glass was one important element, before establishing his own studio.
