Reason for highlighting

This is one of six windows for the north and south aisles, and east and west windows, designed by Arnold Robinson in the early 1920s. Robinson was a pupil of Christopher Whall, whose influence remains in this colourful window.

Other comments

This lovely Arts & Crafts inspired church also has a fine window in the south wall of the south transept by Margaret Chilton (1915) and at the east end of the north wall of the nave a window designed by Florence Camm and made by T. W. Camm Studio (1929).

Artist/maker notes

Arnold Wathen Robinson RWA (1888–1955) trained and then worked with Christopher Whall before becoming principal designer to, and from 1923 owner of, Joseph Bell & Son of Bristol.

Joseph Bell & Son was founded by Joseph Bell (1810-1895) in 1840. There is a fine article on Bell’s early years in Jim Cheshire’s book noted below. Bell was succeeded by his son, Frederick Henry Bell (1847-1899) and grandson, Frederick George Bell (1878-1967) before the business was sold to Arnold Robinson in 1923.
