Reason for highlighting

Wonderful example of contemporary stained glass, full of movement and texture.

Based on the Creation, each of the six lights represents one of the days of Creation. From left to right they are :-

Light 1 – The division of light from darkness

Light 2 – The division of the waters from the firmament

Light 3 – The creation of dry land and vegetation

Light 4 – the creation of the sun, moon and stars

Light 5 – The creation of the birds and fishes

Light 6 – The creation of man and woman

The seventh day, the day of rest and prayer is through the doors opposite: the Church.

Other comments

The main body of the church has many more interesting windows that are well worth exploring. Given Alison Eaton’s role at The Cathedral Studios, of particular interest may be windows by F. W. Cole in the north aisle, as it was Cole who was asked by the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral to establish The Cathedral Studios in the early 1970s. He made three windows for Holy Trinity, the first of which, from 1966, can be seen on his artist page.

Artist/maker notes

Alison Eaton ACR studied Architectural Glass Design (BA Hons) at the Institute of Art and Design Wrexham. She joined The Cathedral Studios, Canterbury in 1998 as a Conservator, Glass Painter, Glazier and Designer. She is now a Senior Conservator and assistant to the Director.

The Cathedral Studios traces its roots back to the appointment of George Austin Snr as first Surveyor to Canterbury Cathedral in 1819. It was established in in its present form in 1972 to undertake the care and conservation of the stained glass windows at the Cathedral. Today it also works on the conservation and restoration of stained glass for other organisations.
