Reason for highlighting

The outstanding window, which has a representation of the Tree of Jesse, has an interesting past. Its original location is unknown, but it was recorded in St Chad’s, Shrewsbury in 1663, before moving to St Mary’s in 1788 after St Chad’s tower collapsed. It was then only 7 lights, but is now 8. The additional glass was supplied by David Evans when he restored the window in 1858. The window was restored again in 1998 by Chapel Studio.

The church is currently in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust, which has added a high quality image of the window to its website, along with a zoom function that allows each panel to be studied in detail.

The above window is supported by many other fascinating panels, principally from Germany and the Low Countries and dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenh century. This church is a jewel in the crown of the Church Conservation Trust and a visit is highly recommended.
