Overview
The cathedral has an interesting selection of windows that range in style from the medieval to the contemporary, as demonstrated by the highlighted window.
The medieval style is represented by a rare work in England by Henri and Alfred Gérente, which although dating from 1853, is based on a 14th century Tree of Jesse. A boldly drawn and impressive four-light window.
A good example of 19th century work is the old west window, now above the entrance to the refectory, by W. F. Dixon, one of Clayton & Bell’s most talented pupils, which is full of colour and movement.
Of particular note from the 20th century is the work of Keith New, both in a series of conventionally leaded windows in St George’s chapel, dedicated to the York and Lancaster Regiment, and in the crypt, where he designed a very innovative Perspex appliqué window. All were installed in 1971, although the St George’s chapel windows had been designed in 1969. Other notable 20th century windows include the large Te Deum window by Christopher Webb in the chapel of the Holy Spirit, 1948, and Harry Harvey’s very boldly coloured window on the ‘Works of Charity’, 1967.

A wonderful design with great sweeps of colour that, although abstract, is full of symbolism, with the Resurrection and the Holy Spirit (golds and reds) transforming human conflict and struggle (blues and violets), and leading to healing, growth and new life (greens).
