Hinchcliffe, Hincks and Burnell / Hincks and Burnell

Hinchcliffe, Hincks and Burnell, later Hincks and Burnell Ltd, was a firm of stained glass designers and manufacturers based in Nottingham in the second quarter of the 20th century.
Horace Turrell Hincks (1886-1964) was born in Leicester and started work as a painter’s apprentice before becoming a stained glass draughtsman with George F Gascoyne & Son of Nottingham. A fellow employee in 1921 was George John Burnell (1877-1965), who was born in London, but had worked as a glass cutter in both Nottingham and Lancaster.
Hinchcliffe, Hincks and Burnell was formed in the mid-1920s and renamed Hincks and Burnell in 1935. The firm ceased in 1950 with Hincks working at 50 High Pavement, Nottingham and Burnell forming a new business, G.J. Burnell & Son, 56 Bloomsgrove, Radford, Nottingham.
The window opposite was made by Hinchcliffe, Hincks and Burnell in 1933 for the former Church of St Michael and All angels, Sutton in Ashfield. When the church closed the window was rescued by the Stained Glass Repository and was reinstalled in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians, Luton in 2025.
