Simeon Solomon (1840-1905) was an English painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelites who was noted for his depictions of Jewish life and same-sex desire. His career was cut short following arrests and convictions for sodomy in 1873 and 1874.
The example of Solomon’s work depicted opposite is a panel from the “Adoration of the Lamb” (1866) window at the Auld West Kirk in Greenock. This cartoon was previously used in the east window (1865) at All Saints Church, Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire.
