Pippet, Joseph Aloysius

Joseph Aloysius Pippet (1840-1903) joined Hardmans as an apprentice and worked for the firm for 50 years, carrying out many decorative schemes, and also designing metalwork, stained glass and textile items.
Several examples of Pippet’s stained glass are found at Shrewsbury Cathedral, including the east window shown opposite, which commemorates the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. His decorative contributions to the cathedral include the Sacred Heart Chapel, painted in a medieval style in 1885.
His sons, Elphege (1868-1942), Oswald (1869-1949), and Gabriel (1880-1962), also contributed their expertise to Hardmans, each specialising in distinct areas. Elphege focused on decorative schemes, Oswald excelled in calligraphy and illuminated addresses, and Gabriel specialised in mosaic and opus sectile.
