Donald Battershill Taunton (1885-1965) was chief designer at Hardman’s from 1935 until his retirement in 1964, and when John Tarleton Hardman retired in 1936, he took over the running of  the firm with Patrick Feeny, Tom Farrell and Vincent Durk.

Unlike most other members of the Harman studio, Taunton had not received a conventional Catholic education but had attended Saltley College School, and afterwards Birmingham School of Art.
