Nuttgens, Joseph A
Joseph Ambrose ‘Joe’ Nuttgens (b. 1941) trained at the Central School of Art and the Royal College of Art, and worked as Patrick Reyntiens’ assistant, mainly on John Piper’s windows. He is the son of Joseph Edward ‘Eddie’ Nuttgens and re-established his studio after his death in 1982. He seeks to make windows that do not necessarily assert his individual style but that complement the architectural space in which they are set, whether it be historic or modern.
Along with the windows highlighted below, special note should be taken of the 18 windows (1998-2000) made for the Catholic Church of St Teresa, Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. They include the Pentecost window shown opposite, which he particulalry enjoyed making, as he was interested in the image of ordinary men, characters – real people, gathered together in a small room suddenly experiencing a kind of realisation or revelation.
